2. OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the residencies are as follows:

  • To support the artistic creation of visual artists. Projects focused on ecology, environmental projects, new ruralities, diversity and rurality, depopulation in Spain’s empty regions, as well as the rescue of ancestral knowledge and memories, will be especially valued.
3. FUNDING AND INCLUDED SERVICES
  • Travel expenses are covered only within Spanish territory, including islands and autonomous cities. International travel costs are not included in this call. Only domestic travel within Spain is covered. If you’re applying from outside Spain, you must arrange your own travel to Madrid.
  • Accommodation, studio, and exhibition space.
  • 700 EUR grant.
  • Visit to the network of Museums in Cuenca. Mediation with local artists and visits to the ArthouseSpain Network in Madrid, the Zapadores City of Art Museum, and La Neomudéjar Museum.
4. SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CALL

The call is designed for the development of artistic residencies for creation within the disciplines of Visual Arts that are connected to the natural environment, delve into climate change, art and ecology, land art, ecofeminism, new ruralities, new media and ecology, and the «phenomenologies of collapse.» These residencies are not intended for completed projects. The work must be original and created during the residency period, so projects produced prior to this call will not be considered. Projects must be feasible during the residency period in Kárstica’s space; obviously, a design and research phase will be necessary, which will be the content of the proposal to be evaluated.

5. APPLICANTS

  • The residency is open to adult artists regardless of nationality. The residency covers travel only within Spain, so artists applying from outside Spain must have their own means for international travel.
  • This grant is specific to individual artists or little collective of two artists.
6. SELECTION CRITERIA

The evaluation of submitted projects will be primarily based on their artistic quality, alignment with the themes of the call, and feasibility within the residency period and space. Projects that provide a perspective on diversity and interact with the local population of Cañada del Hoyo (Cuenca) through workshops, labs, or any informative or recreational activity will be positively evaluated, as well as projects that rescue local knowledge and memories. Proposals from women and/or diverse genders that promote social inclusion and a more equitable society will also be valued. The submitted biography will also be used as an evaluation criterion.

Projects inciting hatred against minorities, being discriminatory, or violating human rights due to sexual orientation, ethnic minorities, functional diversity, etc., will be rejected.

7. APPLICATIONS AND DOCUMENTATION TO BE SUBMITTED

Applicants must submit their application online before the application period ends, attaching the following documents:

  • A dossier in PDF or Word format with a maximum of 20 pages that includes, first, a description of the proposed project, clearly outlining the conceptual development and possible outcomes, understanding that the outcomes may change during its development.
  • Secondly, a portfolio of previous projects, which may include a biography or CV, artist statement, and/or web links to social media, websites, videos, or any relevant material. Finally, it should include all contact information, including the address of residence in Spain, contact phone number, email, website, etc.
8. APPLICATION PERIOD

From May 24 to June 10, 2024.

9. JURY

The selecting jury is composed of the directors of the La Neomudéjar Museums, Zapadores City of Art, and a former resident from previous years.

10. RESOLUTION OF THE CALL

The results will be published on the Kárstica website on June 18, 2024, and via email to the selected artists. No further correspondence or communication will be maintained with applicants not selected.

11. EXECUTION OF THE RESIDENCY AND MONITORING

The project must be developed and completed within the agreed timeframe upon accepting the grant, for which an agreement will be signed between the parties.

The artist must facilitate communication and feedback of the creative process, as well as promote this residency on the networks of the involved institutions. To this end, they must:
– Document the creative process in real time with photos and/or videos on their social media.
– Send the links to their social media with the documentation material weekly, every Monday, during the residency. If they do not have social media, they must send this material via email to the organization.

The artist must inform in advance of any changes to the project proposal during the production process that may significantly alter the original project. They must justify the reasons for such modifications, which may be approved or denied based on the evaluation of the provided information.

12. FORMALIZATION

The selected person must sign the acceptance commitment provided along with the final resolution.

Signing the acceptance commitment by the beneficiary and the invoice is a prerequisite for receiving the grant.

Acceptance of the grant implies the development of the submitted project until its complete execution.

Regarding the stay rules in Kárstica, artists must commit to their full respect and compliance concerning safety, order, and good treatment of the space and their companions. Racist, xenophobic, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated. All residents are obliged to inform the organization if they witness such behavior even if it does not directly involve them.

13. PAYMENT

The grant will be paid in advance to facilitate the proper development of the residency, upon acceptance by the selected persons, receipt of the invoice, and signing of the acceptance commitment agreement.

14. PROJECT DISSEMINATION

The residency recipients agree not to exhibit the work or make it publicly known by any means before it is presented by Kárstica Espacio de Creación and the La Neomudéjar Museum.

Furthermore, the artist will grant the necessary rights for their work to be part of the exhibition catalog or any related material, or included in the promotion of this program as well as current and future promotional media. The artists commit to mentioning that the project was realized at Kárstica through a logo and/or text «Realized in residence Kárstica Espacio de Creación. Grants 2024» in places where it is exhibited or communicated.

15. ACCEPTANCE OF THE GUIDELINES

Participating in this call implies acceptance of its guidelines and its final resolution, which will be unappealable, as well as the waiver of any claims.
