•From May 26 to June 17, 2025
•From July 7 to August 5, 2025
•From August 18 to September 8, 2025
2. PURPOSE
The objectives of the residencies are as follows:
To support the artistic creation of visual artists, regardless of discipline, with special attention to projects focused on ecology and environmental issues, new ruralities, diversity and rural life, depopulation in emptied-out Spain, as well as the recovery of ancestral knowledge and memories. On the other hand, painting projects will also be positively valued, regardless of their theme.
3. FUNDING AND INCLUDED SERVICES
•Round-trip domestic travel from the artists’ place of residence to Cañada del Hoyo. Travel must be within Spanish territory, including island territories and autonomous cities. (International travel is not covered by this call.)
•Accommodation, studio, and exhibition space.
•€700 financial aid for the residency stay.
•Visit to the network of museums in Cuenca. Mediation with local artists and visit to the ArtHouseSpain museum network.
4. SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CALL
This call is intended for the development of artist residencies in the field of Visual Arts that are connected to the natural environment, delve into climate change, art and ecology, land art, ecofeminisms, new ruralities, proposals against rural depopulation, new media and ecology, and the “phenomenologies of collapse.” Under no circumstances are these residencies aimed at already completed projects. The work must be original and created during the residency period; therefore, projects produced prior to this call will not be eligible. Projects must be executable within the residency period and in the space provided by Kárstica. Naturally, a prior design and research phase is expected, and should be included in the proposal for evaluation.
5. ELIGIBILITY
The residency is open to adult artists regardless of nationality. The program covers travel only within Spanish territory, so artists applying from outside Spain must cover their own international travel costs.
This support is exclusively for individual artists; collectives, associations, or other organizations are not eligible.
6. SELECTION CRITERIA
Projects will be evaluated primarily on their artistic quality, relevance to the themes of this call, and their feasibility both in terms of time and space. Projects that offer perspectives on diversity will be positively assessed, as will those that involve interaction with the local population in Cañada del Hoyo (Cuenca) through workshops, labs, or any outreach or recreational activity, and/or contribute to the recovery of local knowledge and memory. Proposals by women and/or individuals of diverse genders that promote social inclusion and a more equitable society will also be positively valued. On the other hand, painting projects will also be positively valued, regardless of their theme.
Biographies and career paths will be considered, so we encourage applicants to represent them clearly.
Projects that promote hate against minorities, are discriminatory, or violate human rights on the basis of sexual orientation, ethnicity, functional diversity, etc., will be rejected.
7. APPLICATIONS AND REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
Applicants must submit their applications online via a web form before the end of the application period, attaching the following documents:
A dossier in PDF or Word format, with a maximum of 30 pages, that includes:
•A project description clearly explaining the conceptual development and potential outcomes (with the understanding that outcomes may evolve during the residency).
•A portfolio of previous projects, which may include biography or CV, artist statement, and/or web links to social media, websites, videos, or any relevant material.
•Complete contact information including current address, phone number, email, website, etc.
8. APPLICATION PERIOD
From April 15 to 30, 2025.
9. JURY
The selection jury will consist of the management team of Art House Spain and a former resident artist.
10. ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS
The final selection will be published on the Kárstica website on May 10, 2025, and sent via email to selected participants. No additional communication will be maintained with applicants who are not selected.
11. RESIDENCY IMPLEMENTATION AND MONITORING
The project must be developed and completed within the agreed time frame upon acceptance of the grant, for which an agreement will be signed between the parties.
The artist must actively contribute to communication and feedback on the creative process, as well as help disseminate the residency through the networks of the involved institutions. To that end, the artist must:
•Document the creative process in real-time with photos and/or video via their social media.
•Submit the links to their social media documentation weekly, every Monday, for the duration of the residency.
•If not using social media, the artist must send the documentation via email to the organization.
The artist must inform the organization in advance of any planned modifications to the project that could significantly alter the original proposal. Any such change must be justified and may be approved or denied based on the submitted information.
12. FORMALIZATION
The selected artist must sign the acceptance agreement provided with the final resolution.
Signing the acceptance agreement and submitting an invoice is a mandatory requirement to receive the grant.
Acceptance of the grant implies commitment to fully complete the proposed project.
Artists must respect and comply with Kárstica’s residency rules regarding safety, order, and respectful behavior toward the space and fellow residents. Racist, xenophobic, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated. All residents are required to report any such behavior, even if they are not directly involved.
13. PAYMENT
The grant will be paid in advance to facilitate proper development of the residency, upon acceptance by the selected artists and receipt of an invoice.
14. PROJECT DISSEMINATION
The artist will grant appropriate rights for their work to be included in the exhibition catalogue(s) or any other related material, as well as in current or future promotional materials for this program. Artists agree to acknowledge that the project was carried out at Kárstica by including the logo and/or text: “Produced during a residency at Kárstica Espacio de Creación – Museo La Neomudéjar. 2025 Grants” in all public presentations or communications.
15. ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS
Participation in this call implies full acceptance of its terms and the jury’s final decision, which is not subject to appeal, as well as the waiver of any type of claim.
Involved entities: Kárstica Espacio de Creación, Museo La Neomudéjar, and Art House Spain.
